ATLANTIC GENERAL HOSPITAL

BEST HEALTHCARE HEROES — Worcester County

It’s Atlantic General Hospital’s mission to create a healthy community, by breaking down the barriers that stand between people and their pursuit of good health. In addition to addressing social determinants of health, Atlantic General is eliminating the barriers of physical distance and inconvenience by providing easier access to outpatient testing and diagnostics, as well as to high-quality specialty care our residents and visitors need most, with expertise in oncology, general surgery, medical and surgical weight loss, orthopedics, mental health, urology and diabetes care. None of it could be done without the talent, expertise, dedication and empathy of its roughly 1,000 healthcare heroes, here to provide care and comfort to patients and their families through emergencies, critical illnesses and complex medical conditions.

“Atlantic General is here for the community— and because of the community. Our community’s leaders fought long and hard to bring Atlantic General into being in 1993, and we will never forget that,” said Atlantic General Hospital President and CEO Donald Owrey, MBA, FACHE. “While we bill for services, Atlantic General is a not-for-profit hospital. That means we reinvest all profits back into the hospital and health system in the form of new programs and technology, as well as recruitment and retention of highquality physicians and staff. We are here to serve.”

For its staff, it’s not just a job. While financial security is the primary reason anyone pursues a career, the less tangible aspects of working at Atlantic General are what draw its staff — and keep them there.

“Across all functions of the organization, the reward of knowing that they have been able to provide comfort in the midst of crisis, clarity during times of stress and confusion, and relieve pain and suffering is what makes our hospital and health system special.” Owrey said. “We’re proud of our healthcare heroes and are gratified that the community also sees them as such.”
