Acclaimed wildlife artist Richard Clifton captures the stunning beauty of nature as a champion of conservation
Renowned wildlife artist Richard Clifton has dedicated his career to celebrating the world around him through his stunning paintings. Born and raised on a farm in Milford, DE, Richard developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors at an early age. Surrounded by the vast marshlands, tidal creeks and diverse wildlife of the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, he found endless inspiration in the landscapes and creatures that defined his home.
Clifton’s artistic journey began as a hobby, sketching waterfowl and other wildlife he observed during hunting trips with his father. Over time, his talent for capturing intricate details and lifelike depictions of animals grew, transforming his passion into a professional career. Today, he is best known for his vibrant and realistic portrayals of birds, particularly waterfowl, which have earned him international acclaim.
His work has graced the covers of numerous state and federal duck stamps, a distinction that highlights both his artistic skill and his dedication to conservation. Winning the prestigious 2007-2008 Federal Duck Stamp Contest, Clifton’s depiction of a pair of northern pintails not only cemented his reputation but also contributed significantly to wetland preservation efforts, as funds from stamp sales support wildlife habitat restoration. He won the contest for a second time in 2021-2022.
Working from his home studio overlooking the marshes, Richard uses a combination of photographs, sketches, and direct observation to inform his art. His paintings often showcase the interplay of light, water, and feathers, with each piece reflecting his intimate knowledge of his subjects. Whether it’s a flock of geese taking flight against a golden sunrise or a solitary heron standing in a quiet estuary, Richard’s art captures the soul of the wild.
Beyond painting, Richard is a passionate advocate for conservation, regularly donating his artwork to wildlife organizations and participating in events that promote environmental awareness. Through his art, he not only celebrates the beauty of Delaware’s ecosystems, but also inspires others to cherish and protect it. Richard’s legacy is one of artistry, stewardship and a profound connection to the land and wildlife that he holds dear.
