TidalHealth Urogynecology

You’ve likely heard of urology and gynecology, but how about urogynecology? Urogynecology is the field of medicine I specialize in, and I’m now seeing patients at TidalHealth Urogynecology in Ocean Pines.

Urogynecology is a newer field that combines urology, gynecology and colorectal surgery. Board certification was first offered in 2013, and I was part of the third class to be trained as a fellow to earn the board certification in urogynecology.

As a urogynecologist, I treat female patients who have pelvic floor disorders, which can include:
• Bladder dysfunction
• Bowel dysfunction
• Pelvic organ prolapse
• Sexual function
• Hormonal imbalances
• Menopausal problems
• Urinary tract infections

Concerns can vary. For example, a woman could have problems emptying her bladder or problems holding her bladder. Even if it seems common, urinary leakage is not just part of life for women — it can be treated.

According to the National Association for Continence, about half of women experience incontinence, but only a quarter of women bring concerns about leaking up to their healthcare practitioners, and it can take six or more years for someone to seek medical treatment. We want you to feel comfortable sharing what’s going on with us.

Sometimes, pelvic floor issues are connected, and we can take a comprehensive and personalized approach to treat your symptoms. Treatment can range from exercises (which we can help you ensure you’re doing correctly) to medications, pessaries (insertable devices that help with pelvic organ prolapse), injections and even robotic surgery if needed.

Nurse Practitioner Logan Nalesnik, APRN, FNP-C, and I also provide routine gynecologic care, as long as you do not need obstetric care. We see patients of all ages.

While these problems may not be life-threatening, they can certainly be lifestyle-limiting. In our practice, we strive to improve patients’ quality of life.
