As a vascular health professional and surgeon, Douglas Wilhite, MD, emphasizes that varicose vein diseases sometimes go deeper and can be tied to deeper circulation problems, or issues related to the spine or lower back. “As a physician that is focused on overall vascular health, I help identify the root of the problem rather than fast-forwarding to a treatment that might be beyond what is medically necessary,” he says.

Patients who visit Dr. Wilhite, Dr. Hossain Said- Mahmoudian and Dr. Michael Bounds at Mid Atlantic Surgical Group in Salisbury, experience a thorough consultation, including an evaluation of symptoms and veins. Treatment generally begins with compression stockings and might advance to ultrasound to find underlying concerns by an in-office vascular ultrasound technologist, who works directly with practice physicians to pinpoint the source.

“All of us have varicose veins and not everyone needs surgery, and that’s important to understand,” Dr. Wilhite says, relating that this holistic approach ensures patients receive the care they really need. And if that is surgery, today’s radio frequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that takes about 15 minutes.

“It involves placing a needle in the vein, numbing it and using microwave energy, which causes the vein to close down over the course of weeks,” Dr. Wilhite explains. “It’s painless, quick and extremely effective.”

Varicose vein care is a special interest for Dr. Wilhite, whose practice includes endovascular techniques and vascular surgeries like aneurysm repair. He also focuses on limb salvage procedures and correcting carotid disease and venous disorders. All of Mid Atlantic Surgical Group’s physicians are certified by the American Board of Surgery and recognized as Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. For more than 30 years, the comprehensive surgical practice has provided general, bariatric and vascular surgery to patients across the Eastern Shore.

Dr. Wilhite, Dr. Said and Dr. Bounds are invested in the community, where they live with their families. “We try very hard to provide comprehensive, high-level care for our patients and to offer the newest forms and standards of therapy,” says Dr. Wilhite.
