Did you know that hearing loss is the third most chronic condition affecting the health of the older, adult population? And that’s not all: Recent research emphasizes the effects of hearing loss on a variety of other health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and anxiety, chronic kidney disease, increased falls and balance difficulties, as well as cognitive decline and dementia.

Dr. Justin Elder, President of Cape Medical Group, had a vision to create a full-service ENT and audiology program that gives residents of southern Delaware a comprehensive hearing healthcare environment. Through dedication and hard work, his vision has come to fruition. The audiology team at Cape Medical Group works to provide the most advanced treatments for patients of all ages through comprehensive audiological evaluations, bone-anchored hearing device evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, as well as fittings and tinnitus management and surgical procedures.

Cape Medical Group is the only practice in the area with two full-time audiologists who work in conjunction with an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist).

Leading the department is Dr. Jean Davison, Director of Audiology. She has been practicing for 35 years, predominantly in Sussex County. She has worked with several ENT physicians and private practices, while also having established the audiology programs at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and Beebe healthcare. She enjoys working in an ENT environment, so her patients get access to the most advanced options while being treated for hearing disorders.

Dr. Davison is supported by Dr. Eryn Evans, a Sussex County native, who officially joined Cape Medical Group after graduating from Towson University with her doctoral degree in Audiology in 2021. Previously, Dr. Evans completed fellowship training in 2020 with the practice. With more than a decade of audiological experience to her credit, Dr. Evans’ advanced diagnostic and rehabilitative skills greatly benefit the patients of Cape Medical Group.

Cape Medical Group audiology strives to not only diagnose and treat hearing loss, but also educate the public on hearing loss and the importance of early treatment. Treating hearing loss appropriately with hearing aids will lower one’s risk for developing dementia. A 2023 study published in The Hearing Review concluded that hearing aids can even slow the rate of cognitive decline by 48% for individuals with memory difficulties.

Key factors to this statistic are to seek proper diagnosis and intervention by a qualified audiologist, who will offer necessary guidance and counseling, as well as a toolkit to assist with self management long-term.

To its further credit, Cape Medical Group has been voted Coastal Style’s Best Hearing Clinic in Sussex County for two consecutive years and its Best ENT Practice three years in a row. With October serving as National Audiology Awareness Month, the practice highly recommends if you or someone you know has difficulty hearing or understanding others, to contact its team to schedule an appointment at 302-703-4025.
