TIDAL HEALTH
Simona Eng, DO, FACOI, SFHM, FACP, fulfills several roles: associate vice president of medical education and designated institutional official; associate program director of TidalHealth’s internal medicine residency; and executive medical director of acute care. She has cared for patients for more than two decades. Now, she is helping to shape the next generation of physicians.
Dr. Eng began as a hospitalist at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in 2001. Hospitalists care for patients while they are in the hospital and, at that time, it was a relatively new field.
Dr. Eng was instrumental in launching TidalHealth’s Graduate Medical Education program, and she continues to lead medical education for the health system. TidalHealth became a sponsoring institution in 2021, and the first TidalHealth internal medicine residency class started in 2022. Now, there are 17 accredited residencies and fellowships, and the program is still growing.
One goal of the Graduate Medical Education program is to retain many of those who train at TidalHealth, and half of the inaugural graduating class is still with TidalHealth. Dr. Eng recruited program directors to the area to help launch new programs. She says although residents and fellows train in a rural setting at TidalHealth, they still gain experience by treating and learning from a wide range of diseases.
“By adding the programs that we have, we can keep care close to home, too,” she says.
In 2025, TidalHealth opened offices in several new specialties, including rheumatology, geriatrics and palliative medicine.
While she spends much of her time interacting with residents, fellows and medical students, spending time caring for patients is important to her, too. “Taking care of patients is absolutely critical to who I am,” Dr. Eng says.
Pursuing Her Purpose

TIDAL HEALTH
Katherine Rodgers, EdD, MPH, in her role as director of community health initiatives and population health management, has a life-changing impact on people and communities.
Katherine oversees community wellness along with nutrition and diabetes education. Community wellness includes prevention, outreach, screenings, chronic disease management and addressing factors leading to frequent emergency department visits.
Improving the health of the community isn’t something that just one person, department or organization can do alone. Katherine collaborates with local health coalitions, builds community partnerships and oversees the Community Health Needs Assessment, a process that helps TidalHealth and county health officials take a clear, data-driven look at identifying shared priorities for action.
While working at the Worcester County Health Department, she earned her master’s degree in public health. In 2025, she earned a doctorate in organizational leadership, learning and innovation.
Katherine began working at TidalHealth in 2019 and moved into her current role the following year. It was the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she soon organized mass vaccination clinics. She was already knowledgeable about pandemics, as her master’s capstone project was on isolation in quarantine plans during Ebola.
Health equity has always been important, and Katherine and her team assist those who experience healthcare disparities. One program that TidalHealth piloted in 2025 is called Food is Medicine—a healthy food delivery program for patients with specific medical needs. Katherine says she loves her team’s passion for what they do.
“It is purpose-driven work that keeps me going,” she says.
Salute to Service

TIDAL HEALTH
TidalHealth’s mission is to improve the health of the communities it serves, and Kathryn Fiddler, vice president of population health at TidalHealth, is always working toward that end.
“I get to work on the mission every day,” says Kathryn, who is a member of TidalHealth’s executive team.
Behavioral health, community wellness, Alice B. Tawes Nursing & Rehabilitation, school-based wellness centers, care coordination and the Richard A. Henson Research Institute all fall under her purview.
A recent project Kathryn has been involved with is TidalHealth’s new mobile mammography unit, which will bring mammogram screenings to rural areas on Delmarva. The mobile unit’s ribbon-cutting was held in October 2025, and when it starts making visits this year, women will also be able to learn about other ways to maintain or improve their health.
Kathryn, a breast cancer survivor who did not face barriers to accessing care, has heard many stories along the way—some of which were significantly different from her own.
“Just being able to understand the ‘why’ for so many people, and how important this is, made it so much more valuable as a passion for me,” she says.
Kathryn is a retired major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and before joining TidalHealth in 2016, she worked in Baltimore. Now, she has the opportunity to live, work and play in the same place, she says.
Having been mentored in the past, Kathryn now enjoys taking on the mentor role for others.
“I genuinely love seeing people succeed,” she says.

TWO TREE INTEGRATIVE HEALTH
At Two Tree Integrative Health in Easton, owner and nurse practitioner Stefanie DeFiglia, CRNP, FNP-BC, IFMCP, brings a refreshing, solutions-focused approach to women’s wellness on the Eastern Shore.
As the first Institute for Functional Medicine-certified practitioner in the region, she offers a level of expertise and insight that is both rare and deeply needed. Stefanie founded Two Tree in 2019 after her own struggle with chronic illness led her to functional medicine and changed the course of her life. That experience inspired her to create a practice where women feel heard, understood and empowered with a clear path forward.
Stefanie’s work centers on helping women navigate the many layers of hormonal health, especially during the menopause transition. She addresses the full picture—hormones, metabolic changes, digestive function and brain health—and believes the conversation around menopause should reflect the real complexity of what women experience. Her patient-centered philosophy begins with curiosity rather than judgment. She listens closely to each woman’s story, identifies opportunities for healing and partners with patients to create individualized, goal-driven plans.
That collaborative spirit extends throughout the Two Tree team, where a holistic model ensures every patient receives thoughtful, coordinated care. Stefanie also remains committed to advancing her field.
Stefanie sees functional medicine continuing to gain recognition as more women seek root-cause answers rather than quick fixes. Her message to readers is simple and powerful: Trust your intuition and don’t give up. Sometimes the right questions make all the difference.
