Expert arthritis and rheumatoid condition care
David Wanalista, DO, joined Atlantic General Health System in the fall of 2018 to provide greatly needed rheumatologic care at Atlantic General Rheumatology in Berlin and Atlantic General Specialty Care in Ocean View. Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with certifications in internal medicine and rheumatology, Dr. Wanalista has 14 years of clinical experience in private practice and spent three years teaching the next generation of physicians as a clinical professor of internal medicine at Inspira Medical Center in Vineland, NJ.
Since practicing on the Eastern Shore, he has treated patients with a variety of rheumatic conditions.
“Our area has a lot of retirees, so osteoporosis is a common condition I’ve treated, as are gout, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis,” Dr. Wanalista said. “Osteoporosis is very common in our postmenopausal female population. Osteoarthritis is more common in the elderly, but not uncommon in younger individuals predisposed to things such as impact sports — figure skaters with early knee osteoarthritis, for example.”
The greatest innovation in rheumatology, in his opinion, is office/bedside musculoskeletal ultrasound, which he offers in the Berlin office.
“I can diagnose things like rotator cuff tears during the office visit or evaluate a small joint, such as a knuckle in the finger, with inflammation from something such as rheumatoid arthritis in a patient who ‘feels fine’ or has normal labs.”
