“I was fortunate to have a good mentor, who taught me that being a surgeon is about more than just the procedure,” Dr. Zarif said. ”It’s also about communication with the patient, to make sure that they understand what’s going on, that I’ve answered all their questions and that I’ve done my best to alleviate any fears.”

Designated as one of the Top 100 surgeons in the U.S. for chelcystecomy (laparascopic gallbladder removal) surgeries by Dexur, Dr. Zarif specializes in advanced laparoscopic procedures and bariatric, vascular and oncology surgeries.

“I really enjoy oncology surgery, particularly breast surgery procedures. Colon cancer as well. To do surgery like that, you not only have to be a good surgeon; you have to offer a good experience,” Dr. Zarif said. “When patients are struggling with something as catastrophic as a cancer diagnosis, we can help in more than one way. We have built a multidisciplinary team at the Burbage Regional Cancer Care Center to provide much-needed support that goes beyond the treatment of the actual disease, and I like being a part of that. It’s very rewarding to see their recovery. At this stage of my career, I like being able to do that.”
