With more than 300,000 interventions to its credit, the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center has become the go-to place for state-of-the-art cardiac care on the Eastern Shore
When it comes to diagnosing and treating heart problems, having a nationally recognized, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facility close by is a comforting thought.
The Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center offers comprehensive services performed by well-trained, experienced, board-certified physicians in the areas of electrophysiology, vascular surgery, cardiac and thoracic surgery and interventional cardiology.
Since 1974, the Institute has been the provider of choice for cardiac care on Delmarva, performing more than 300,000 interventions and more than 15,000 open heart surgeries. The Institute’s award-winning program incorporates wellness, prevention, diagnostics, interventional procedures, surgical solutions and follow-up care.
The Institute’s Electrophysiology (EP) Lab offers comprehensive services, including electrophysiology studies, device placement and complex procedures for the treatment of arrhythmias, including cryoablation.
Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
It also provides complete cardiovascular and thoracic surgery services. Since 1974, when the first open heart surgery was performed at PRMC, the region’s most experienced team of clinical professionals has provided each patient the best surgical technology, care, safety and recovery options, creating exceptional outcomes.
At the Institute, board-certified vascular surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease, along with general vascular surgery. PRMC’s Vascular Lab is certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Labs (IAC).
For patients on Delmarva with blocked arteries, coronary artery disease and other conditions, the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute is the provider of choice. PRMC’s physicians perform thousands of cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties and other interventions — including coronary stenting — annually.
As a designated Cardiac Interventional Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services and Systems, PRMC receives patients transported by EMS providers so they can be given medications, catheter-based coronary intervention procedures and other cardiac care in a comprehensive, acute-care setting.
Prevention & Healing
For optimal recovery after cardiac or pulmonary procedures or diagnoses, patients may take advantage of the professional services offered through PRMC’s Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Preventive Cardiology Department. The program is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region, with more than 1 million patient encounters since its establishment in 1986. Vernon Rivers, of Salisbury, credits his healthy heart to the program. Knowing heart problems could be in his future, Rivers enrolled in the Adult Fitness Program in 1994. After nearly 20 years with the program, he learned three years ago that he would need to undergo triple bypass surgery. Following surgery, Rivers enrolled in Cardiac Rehabilitation and has returned to the Adult Fitness program, continuing to exercise a minimum of three times per week. “The staff is wonderful there,” he said. “PRMC is a wonderful hospital and I would recommend it to anyone. It’s a good hospital with good leadership and a wonderful and caring nursing staff.”
PRMC Offers Frree Heart Screenings
Free heart health screenings are available by appointment at Peninsula Regional Medical Center by calling 410-543-7026. Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The screenings include a free heart disease risk assessment that includes a fasting lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL, risk ratio and glucose), ankle/brachial index, resting 12-lead EKG, body fat/body mass index; blood pressure and pulse oximetry testing and more. Those who choose to participate must not currently be under the care of a cardiologist or have a known history of heart disease. Because of the blood testing, a 12-hour fast is required beforehand.
Free three-part vascular screenings are offered by appointment monthly at Peninsula Regional for people 55 and over with risk factors (high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, family history) or symptoms of vascular disease (leg pain when walking, numbness in leg or foot, stroke-like symptoms, unexplained abdominal or back pain). The comprehensive screening includes an ultrasound of carotid arteries, an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening and peripheral artery disease (PAD) screening. This same screening is performed every other month at the Peninsula Regional Family Medicine Ocean Pines. Appointments are required. Call 410-543-7123 to schedule yours.
