2019 Healthcare Experts: Peninsula Regional Medical Center
Industry Leaders in Surgical Weight Loss
For those who qualify for surgical weight loss, Peninsula Regional Medical Center offers an award-winning bariatric surgery program that has helped more than 3,000 patients lose weight since its inception.
Candidates for bariatric surgery include patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 35 who have a co-morbidity — such as diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea — or patients with a BMI above 40 who do not have a co-morbidity.
Potential patients meet with a surgeon to determine if they are a candidate for surgery and what type is most appropriate. Three bariatric surgeons – Dr. Brion McCutcheon, MD, FACS, Dr. Un Chin, MD, FACS, and Dr. William Haberlin, MD, FACS — perform a wide variety of procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch and revisional surgeries.
For patients who are not candidates for surgical weight loss or who do not want to commit to a surgical procedure, a medical weight-loss option is available and provided by CoreLife. On Delmarva, Peninsula Regional Health System is the exclusive partner.
CoreLife provides the preoperative nutrition and psychological evaluations required by most insurance companies for bariatric surgery. They can also help patients lose weight preoperatively to achieve a safer weight before surgery, potentially decreasing surgical complication risks.
“Being overweight can cause multiple medical problems including diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, coronary heart disease, back and joint pain and even increases the risk of several types of cancer,” Dr. McCutcheon said. “We are dedicated to helping our patients and enhancing their quality of life.”
While surgery can be the appropriate course of treatment for many, Dr. Chin counsels patients that surgery alone does not provide the best chance for weight loss.
“Both nutritional counseling and exercise are required,” he said.
PRMC was the first hospital on the Eastern Shore to be named a Center of Excellence by both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery; it is designated a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield; and it has been named a Bariatric Institute of Quality by Aetna.
