One of the key elements continuously demonstrated by Phyllis Mitchell and Andrea Hastings of Mitchell and Hastings Financial Services is their unique ability to relate to their clients’ needs
Phyllis Mitchell found her true vocation the hard way. Having lost her first husband unexpectedly, she suddenly found herself a young widow with a child to raise — a situation she admits she was totally unprepared for.
“After my husband died, I realized that I didn’t even know where he kept the checkbook, much less what to do with it once I found it.” That sobering sense of uncertainty made Phyllis more than a little uncomfortable, so she decided to do something about it. She dug in her heels and educated herself. Today, following three decades’ worth of education, testing, licensing and certification, Phyllis stands proudly as an esteemed and trusted CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and the principal of Mitchell and Hastings Financial Services in West Ocean City.
Phyllis has served as a guest speaker to a wide variety of civic, business and social organizations, and has written numerous articles on finance for local newspapers. She also taught financial planning at Salisbury University. Her status as an Office of Supervisory Jurisdiction, in association with National Planning Corporation, means she has supervision of a group of financial planners, who stretch from Salisbury to Annapolis and from Severna Park to Federalsburg.
If Phyllis found her calling in the aftermath of a personal tragedy, then it would be fair to say she found her professional “soul mate” some 25 years ago, when her fledgling firm was looking for an assistant/office manager.
“I’d had a lot of experience in business management,” reports Andrea Hastings, Phyllis’s partner in Mitchell and Hastings Financial Services, “so I came into the company with that skill set already in place. But I wanted to become equally adept in finance, so I essentially embarked on a whole new career while still a young wife and mother raising two children.” Her perseverance paid off, as Andrea is now a veteran lecturer, Professional Plan Consultant™ and Investment Adviser Representative with National Planning Corporation, in addition to holding insurance licenses in seven states.
In the early days, the partners had a rather targeted mission and clientele — giving exceptional service and sound financial planning to women, especially those in need. “Many of these women reminded me of myself after my husband died, when I was virtually clueless about how to lead an independent life,” Phyllis shared. “Understanding these complex financial issues can be like learning a new language, so it seemed to me that this was where I could do the most immediate good.”
Mitchell and Hastings Financial Services has expanded exponentially since then. They’ve added skilled associates such as Julie Daum and Caroline Anthony to properly service a comprehensive client base that includes men, women, couples, multigenerational families, small businesses and even large corporations — at every level of income and prosperity.
