Since at least the 1950s, Americans have been searching for the better way to win the battle of the bulge. Unfortunately, it seems the passage of time has done little to help the problem. High-calorie, high-fat and high-sodium products are everywhere, while increasingly demanding schedules allow less time than ever for things like exercise. So, then, how does one get that crucial kick-start to looking and feeling better? Well, according to many industry experts, CoolSculpting
may just be the way.

The MedSpa has staff who are experts at applying this intriguing new technology, so we spoke with founding partner Dr. Lorraine Jarrah to get the skinny on losing the fat.

Dr. Jarrah, what is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting was developed a few years ago by scientists at Harvard University. Basically, the technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin, essentially freezing them away.

What happens to those frozen fat cells?
Eventually, the body naturally eliminates them.

Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting?
Anyone who has noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to get rid of is a good candidate. CoolSculpting is designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists even diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight-loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however, a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction, which is an invasive surgical procedure that includes risks associated with infection, anesthesia, pain and downtime. CoolSculpting doesn’t have these risks.

What does it feel like?
The device is positioned on the body, and controlled cooling is applied. As the process begins, patients will feel pressure, tugging, numbness and intense cold, which soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptops or even take naps during their treatments.

Are there side-effects?
Typical side-effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling and stinging.

How long after a CoolSculpting treatment may one return to their normal activities?
CoolSculpting is completely nonsurgical, so most patients return to normal activity immediately. Any side-effects are temporary and will resolve completely.

Are the results permanent?
Yes. Once the treated fat cells are eliminated from the body, they’re gone for good. One may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks, though the most dramatic results occur after approximately two months. During this time, the body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to six months after the treatment.

Are some practices better at performing CoolSculpting treatments than others?
I would say without a doubt, yes. The MedSpa has been performing CoolSculpting treatments since 2011 and is the only Certified CoolSculpting Treatment Center on the Eastern Shore. Additionally, we offer free consultations.
