After 35 years at the helm of what many satisfied patients feel is the most elite and advanced dental practice in Worcester County, Dr. Geoffrey Robbins has stepped down as managing partner of Atlantic Dental Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, officially retired as of July 1.

Having begun his career in dentistry in 1972, Dr. Robbins launched Atlantic Dental in Ocean City on January 1, 1978. His founding principle was that Atlantic Dental would be different. They would offer the best treatment available with an emphasis on smile enhancement and unsurpassable patient care. They would, Dr. Robbins insisted, treat the person, not just the mouth.

Dr. Robbins further exemplified his emphasis on people by being very involved in the community that has been his home for more than 50 years. In addition to having served on numerous boards, commissions and civic organizations, Dr. Robbins has served on the Planning & Zoning Commission for the Town of Ocean City for over 25 years, been on the board of directors for the Ocean City Development Corporation and is a member of the St. Martins Church Restoration Committee. He is a past member of the Lions Club of Ocean City, the Worcester County Board of Tourism and the Downtown Association. Professionally, Dr. Robbins has been a member of the Ethics Board of the Eastern Shore Dental Society for the past 10 years.

Part of building his practice’s impeccable reputation meant making the right moves at the right times. One such move occurred in 1994, when he hired Dr. Lawrence Michnick to join him in the practice. An honors graduate from the prestigious NYU School of Dentistry, Dr. Michnick came, suffice it to say, highly recommended. After dental school, he’d completed an intensive yearlong residency program with concentrations in implant and restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics and oral surgery at Nassau County Medical Center. The residency program also included education in treating the anxious or nervous patient. To this day, he especially enjoys taking on new patients who in the past perhaps had an unhappy dental experience elsewhere so that he could create a brand-new legacy of comfort and confidence for them.

Both Drs. Robbins and Michnick have always felt it a privilege to be able to give that gift to their patients, so it’s no wonder, then, that in 2010 they created an association with Delmarva Sedation Dentistry to work within the space of their already thriving practice.

“I believe that Atlantic Dental rose to the top as the area’s most elite and successful dental practice by following our mission statement,” said Dr. Michnick, who had become a partner in the practice a few years after his arrival and is now taking over for Dr. Robbins as its managing partner. “Dr. Robbins always believed strongly in being on top of new dental technology, in terms of both equipment and education. He will always be known as the founder of Atlantic Dental.”

In the fulfillment of Dr. Robbins’ mission, the practice made a commitment to staying up-to-date with the newest technologies. As a result, both the dentists and their dental teams have attended the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.

“We wanted to change the image of dentistry on Delmarva while creating a serene, relaxing experience for our patients,” said Dr. Michnick. “The development of the office in West Ocean City is one of the fruits of our labor. We created a spalike environment, while equipping the office with the most up-to-date technology in the industry. We pamper the patients with massaging dental chairs, music, warm neck wraps and hot wax paraffin hand treatments. We also take pride in keeping our appointments running on time.”
Like Dr. Robbins before him, Dr. Michnick, who is married with two children, also feels it’s important to give back to the community. As such, he has held all offices in the Ocean City/Berlin Rotary Club and is also a past president of Temple Bat Yam in Berlin.

Dr. Michnick’s partner/co-owner in the practice is Dr. Christopher Takacs, who joined Atlantic Dental in 2006. A Wilmington native and father of three, Dr. Takacs studied mechanical engineering at the University of Delaware and graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1998. He then went on to the University Of Kentucky College of Dentistry to earn his DMD. Dr. Takacs has a particular interest in implant and restorative dentistry and has concentrated his continuing education in those areas.

The latest addition to the team is Corey Smith, DDS. Not only is Dr. Smith is a brand-new father to a beautiful baby girl, his mother, Debby Smith, has been a hygienist with Atlantic Dental for 35 years. Both Smiths were inspired to enter dentistry because of their association with Dr. Robbins. In welcoming their newest practitioner, Dr. Michnick declared, “We are so pleased to have Debby’s son join our practice and to welcome the second generation of her family to join the Atlantic Dental family.

“As managing partner, it is important to follow the same direction as my mentor, Dr. Robbins,” Dr. Michnick continued. “Thus, we will continue to maintain the highest industry standards while keeping pace with the latest developments in techniques, technology and equipment. We also continue our community involvement and give back to the people who have been so good to us and have trusted us with their care.”
