November-December 2010 | MIND-BLOWING TALENT

Jeffrey Auxer’s holiday ornaments make a glassy splash with the art lovers of the Eastern Shore

It must be pretty amazing to experiment with something new and find out that
you have a prodigious talent for doing it professionally.

That’s Jeff Auxer’s story, and that’s what he’d learned almost the moment he sat in
his first glass-blowing class at Salisbury University some four years ago.

“I consider myself very lucky,” Auxer said, “because at the time, I didn’t even know what glass blowing was. But it seemed to come to me very easily, and the instructor was kind enough to reinforce that perception and encourage me to continue with it.”

Since that auspicious beginning, Auxer has opened his own studio in Berlin, Jeff Auxer Designs, which has quickly garnered the 26-year-old an avid fan-base, lots of clients and a reputation as one of the region’s most talented young artists.

Auxer has something beautiful for everyone who visits his studio. For anywhere from $15-$30, you can get an original set of earrings, cufflinks, rings, paperweights or Christmas ornaments.

Drinking glasses, bowls, vases and other life-based creations (e.g., shells, fish) can be had for under $200. More elaborate creations, meanwhile, such as hanging plate sets, sinks, lamps and even chandeliers range from the mid-hundreds to well in the thousands of dollars depending upon what the client is looking for.

Auxer’s one-of-a-kind creations can be found at private homes throughout the region in addition to local hotspots such as The Globe in Berlin and the Captain’s Table Restaurant in Ocean City.

But if you’d like to test out your own glass jaw, Auxer is pleased to announce that through the months of November and December, he’ll be holding glass-blowing classes at his Berlin studio on Saturdays for $15 per classes. The artist emphasizes that all ages are welcome.
