Dana Bartholomew of Dana Marie Photography aims to provide local women with more self-esteem and celebrate their beauty through her images

Award-winning photographer Dana Bartholomew is on a mission. The popular and talented local entrepreneur wants to raise the collective self-esteem of women across the Shore and celebrate their beauty through her images.

“Photographing women has always been a part of my business, be it on a wedding day, with their families on the beach, expecting a new baby or corporate headshots,” Dana said. “These instances are usually with other people, where they can position themselves away from the forefront. I want to get more women in front of the camera, rather than hiding behind the photographer, watching their children be photographed or waiting until they lose weight before doing so.”

Her message has personal meaning, too, which she said helps connect her even more with her clients. “I am a busy wife and mom of three kids. After my first was born, I hated having my photo taken, but now I look back on that time and regret that I hadn’t documented it more with and for my kids,” Dana said. “Our bodies go through several changes throughout our lives, and I want women to be proud of where they are today and feel beautiful.”

It’s so important to Dana that she’s created a new focus to her portfolio of services. In addition to specializing in custom, professional portraits, weddings and family portraiture, she launched “Ocean City Boudoir by Dana Marie Photography” in 2017 — and it’s taken off in a big way.  “A lot of people think it’s all about the lingerie, but it’s not,” she said. “It’s about empowerment and self-esteem for women no matter where they are in life.”

Dana’s also passionate about documenting today’s future memories through her photography and encouraging people to not only preserve those images but to print them professionally and use them throughout in their everyday lives.

“How much would it mean to you to go through your great-grandparents’ photo albums?” Dana asked. “I am hopeful that people will print more photos instead of simply having them stored on digital media and forgotten. They can be used for albums, or even better, as artwork in a family’s home or office.”

Voted “Best Photographer” (2015-2017) and “Best Wedding Photographer” (2017) by the readers of Coastal Style, Dana is well-known for her artistic abilities, which include her affinity for using natural and artificial light sources. “When it comes to light, I’ll chase it or create it when I don’t have what I need,” she said. “Not being at the sun’s mercy gives me an edge, to use artificial light to capture the shot I envision.”
