The Art League of Ocean City stands poised to mount its best plein-air event yet

After a multiyear hiatus, the Art League of Ocean City is once again sponsoring a summertime plein-air event. “Artists Paint Ocean City” will be held on July 16 and 17 and will feature up to 50 plein-air artists painting the sights and scenes throughout the city. A complimentary barbecue dinner will be served to artists (and a guest) on the 16th at the Art League of Ocean City, followed by a show exhibit and sale on Somerset St., off the boardwalk, on Sunday the 17th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

Art League officials state that this year’s event will differ from previous ones in some important ways. The 2011 outing, for example, marks an unprecedented partnership with the Ocean City Development Corporation, which is providing $1,750 in prize money for the top-three finishers. Moreover, there will be two separate opportunities for artists to sell their work — one at the wet-paint sale on Somerset St., the other at a special exhibit during the month of August at ALOC’s gallery on 94th St., where the artists can display their finished and framed artwork. There will be an opening reception on August 5th at 5 p.m. to kick off the show.

“We’re extremely pleased to once again have a plein-air event in Ocean City,” said Margaret Spurlock, president of the ALOC. We’ve structured it so that it will be appealing to both tourists and art lovers alike. I’d also like to express my gratitude to the Ocean City Development Corporation, whose support and partnership have been so instrumental in making sure this year’s event will not only be memorable but likely the best one yet.”

Taking on the judging honors this year are accomplished artists Kevin Fitzgerald and Randy Hofman, both of whom are based in Berlin. Nationally recognized and arguably the region’s most prominent painter, Fitzgerald is currently artist-in-residence at the Water’s Edge Gallery in Berlin, while Hofman enjoys consistently increasing popularity for his work as both a painter and sand sculptor.

The winning artist will receive a first-place prize of $1000, with second- and third-place finishes garnering $500 and $250, respectively.
