At a time when primary-care physicians are at a premium, Sussex County finds itself fortunate to be the locale of Dr. Thomas F. Kelly’s shingle. Dr. Kelly graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1996 and finished his residency at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital in 2000. Since then he’s served as medical director at Delaware Health and Social Services’ Stockley Center outside Georgetown and more recently as medical director and internist at Deer’s Head Hospital in Salisbury.

“I chose the region for a number of reasons, including the proximity to my home in Rehoboth,” Dr. Kelly said. “I also saw that there is a need for primary-care physicians in the area.”

After working for a decade in different areas of medicine, Dr. Kelly wanted to take his experience to a private practice, where he could treat not just symptoms and conditions but people themselves. He says he’s had the opportunity to meet many members of the community since that decision and has found it gratifying to hear how many of them are excited to have a primary-care provider with his credentials establish a practice in the region. In the past, Dr. Kelly has worked with adults with developmental disabilities and says he has a special interest in chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease. He has excelled not just because of his elite training and talent but also because he uses a patient-centered approach to help people work through their ailments.

From 1986-1992, he worked as a registered nurse and would later serve his country for six years as a medical technician in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Board certified since 2000, he founded Healthy Delawareans with Disabilities in 2010, while he was working for the state of Delaware.

Dr. Kelly aspires to help his patients live more healthful lives and intends to work in partnership with his patients, to better understand their goals and provide them with the very best therapy options.

As part of Shore Community Medical, Dr. Kelly specializes in internal medicine and primary care and is credentialed through Beebe Healthcare. Dr. Kelly noted that he is gratified that his staff has been able to adopt a consistent philosophy of caring that has made Shore Community Medical successful. His entire staff maintains a cheerful attitude that puts patients at ease, which helps him remain focused on patient care.

“It has been a wonderful experience and a real pleasure for me to establish my primary-care practice here in Sussex County,” Dr. Kelly said. “I’m going into my fifth year of private practice here this year, and I can honestly say it is an honor to be able to serve and care for a community that is so exceptional, where I actually see the positive impact of my practice over time.”
